Poppy is a Super Star! - May 2009

Well, once again we are sorry for the gap in updating everyone. We hope this finds you all well! Here is our latest news....
Poppy's News
Health wise, this has been a good few months for Poppy. She seems happy, strong, is getting chunky (bless her!) & is symptom free. We have noticed a few of the radiotherapy side effects now - Poppy has had some issues with word finding (e.g. she called a plane a ship, then a rocket before she remembered plane), her mathematical skills & understanding of concepts is much poorer than prior to radiotherapy, but she is still enjoying school & making excellent progress. Thank you to the quick action of the Staffordshire Visual Impairment Team & Poppy's class teacher, Poppy now has an SEN assistant who supports her each day in Literacy & Numeracy & at lunchtimes. This is already helping Poppy's concentration & confidence at school - especially as she won 'Star of the Week'. Poppy really loves her new friend Mrs. Parr! Her next scan is on 20th May, with results on 26th May, as always we are hoping hard for all to be stable.

Poppy has been enjoying dancing since her 3rd birthday in 2006. She doesn't find the steps easy, after all doctors thought she may never walk, but she tries so hard & on stage she really does sparkle!!! Poppy has been busy learning her first ever solo ('Me & my Teddy Bear' a song & dance solo!) & yesterday (May 3rd) was her first time in a dance competition. I'd explained that as there were 6 in the section & only 4 medals, she probably wouldn't get one but we would be so proud of her for trying hard & we would treat her to a present!! Well, Poppy was nervous, bless her, but she went on smiled her way through & looked wonderful!!! And she came 2nd!!!! You can imagine how much we all cried!!! Brian said, he always feels proud of Poppy, how she has overcome so much in her short life so far, but yesterday was his proudest moment as a Daddy!!!  Thank you to Laura for all of your hard work with Poppy! And.... WELL DONE, POPPY!!!

Poppy's Website
Our friend, Lee Parker, initially set up Poppy's website as a surprise for us in 2005. It was fantastic from the start! However, as the charity has grown & we have become involved in more things, we were calling on poor Lee on a daily basis, after a long day at work for him. We therefore decided to have a new website designed using a web company (Primary Site actually make my school website, but gave us 50% off their price for Poppy Fields). The new website has a whole section for supporting parents like us (Special Mums & Dads), a section dedicated to our cricket team (more on this later...)  & lots more! As it is so new, there is a lot of stuff that we need to add, but please do visit the new website & leave Poppy a message in her guest book - she loves reading them! We would like to say a great big thank you to Lee for his amazing work over the last few years & to Primary Site for the excellent new website!

Poppy Fields Cricket Club
Brian has played cricket each season since we met in 2000 for a team with his brother, nephew & a great gang who have become wonderful friends. This season, the team needed a new sponsor. So, we are the official sponsors!!! The team is now called 'Poppy Fields Cricket Club' - with a fab new kit to match! There is a section on the website with match reports, fixture list & photos. Do have a look if you get chance! Thank you to all in the cricket team for supporting us - we can now raise awareness of our charity & fundraise throughout the season!!

We would like to thank Auntie Janine, Uncle Gary, my cousin Steven & all those from AFH in Bromsgrove who very kindly took part in a sponsored walk up Mount Snowdon & raised a huge £1000!! Thank you Karen for organising this! Also, thank you to the Hampton-in-Arden Folk dancers who raised £200 for Poppy Fields. There are currently 3 people training for events individually to support us too - Lisa Kelly, Stuart Meer & Russ Cockburn - you can find their Just Giving pages in the 'Friends of Poppy Fields' section of the website.

Our support group
We now have 11 members in or support group & are enjoying our monthly get-togethers. It is nice just to have an informal chat with other parents in the same situation as you. Thank you to the Coton Centre for providing us with such a lovely room & to Nicky, Tracey & all at Sainsbury's for providing our refreshments for the year! The next meeting is on Monday 1st June at 11am at The Coton Centre.

Poppy's Friends
Thank you all who ask about Poppy’s friends too. We are happy to report that they too are all well at the moment - an amazing group of kids!! Please may we ask for your continued thoughts & prayers for Poppy & her friends - Abi, George, Jasmine, Haydn, Mia, Hope, Alex & all of the special kids from our Optic Glioma Online support group. Thank you.

Love Lisa, Brian & Poppy x
